for Paul - timed for mid-september
Rachel's not doing well. She is not doing well at all. By now the entire island knows about Brooke, more or less. She's not exactly sure when she last ate but she's certain it was by Raylan's prompting and the only thing that has kept her from falling head first into a bottle is Danny's suspicion and the promise she made him. She's never wanted a drink so badly in her life and she prays, she prays that he's wrong. She can't be pregnant. She can't. But God if it's not likely. She's sick all the time and she doesn't know when the fuck her last period was and Christ, she cannot be pregnant. She slips up to the main clinic as quickly as she can, keeping her head down and praying she's got the shifts correct. It has to be Paul. She can't do this with anyone else. Her breath freezes in her chest when she spots him through the open door. "Paul," she croaks, knocking on the door frame. "I need to talk to you."

"Rach?" he asks her, reaching out with one hand to catch her by the shoulder. "What's wrong?"

"What?"

"I think I'm pregnant. It's been two months without a period. I'm sick all the time. I'm...fucking exhausted. I need to know. Raylan doesn't know."

He squeezes her shoulder and then offers her his hand.
"I can totally do that for you."

"You trust me, right?"

"Spine," he says, gently. "Skull."

She's pregnant. She's a mom and Brooke's gone and she's going to have Raylan's baby. Christ, she feels sick.
"Oh God," she whispers.

He frowns and reaches out, smoothing her hair back from her face. "It's okay, Rachel. It's a good thing. Isn't it?"

"I'll give you an exam in a minute to check," he says, gently. "But that heartbeat? Was great. And we'll look at how many calories you're getting. I am good at my job, Rachel. I am great at my job. And I am going to take care of you."

"Thank you," she says, trying to convey just how desperately thankful she is in those two words. "Can we do the exam, now? I want to get it over with."

"Is it," she starts, trying to force her voice to be steadier. "Is it okay? Did I fuck it all up?"

"Of course he won't, Rach. You didn't know either and this baby...it's not planned. You need to get used to the idea yourself before you deal with him."
