"Hop up," he says, and he gets the machine fired up. He shifts closer, glancing into her face as he gets started on the scan. And then there it is, suddenly - a heartbeat. He studies the screen for a second and then reaches out to trace the image with his thumbnail.

"Spine," he says, gently. "Skull."
